Driver Exam (CDL/DOT)
Overview
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination is a medical checkup required for commercial vehicle drivers by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the California DMV.
Why is a CDL/DOT physical exam needed?
It ensures that people driving commercial motor vehicles are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit. The exam must be conducted by a licensed medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.
Who needs it?
Drivers who:
- Operate motor vehicles that carry more than 15 people.
- Are paid to operate motor vehicles that carry more than 8 people.
- Transport hazardous materials that require vehicles to display a placard.
- Drive a vehicle on the interstate with a gross combination weight rating of over 10,000 pounds.
How long does the exam take?
Up to 45 minutes.
